New Updated Version of Skate Wizards Added!!! 4/20/24

Updates

Character Creation - Step 2
The line “These stats increase as you level up.” caused some confusion. Some folks expected their Defense Number (DN) to increase so we’re changing that to “some stats increase as you level up.”

Combat Rules - Attack Bonus
The Attack Bonus has probably been the most asked about item. GMs are always free to do whatever they want at their table but in the game as written there is no attack bonus available until level 3 where it becomes an option. We have clarified the combat rules to read “The attacker makes an Attack Roll (AR) by rolling 2D6 and adding their Attack Bonus (AB), if applicable (for instance, if a character is level 3).

Skate Trick Names Table Descriptive Text
The purpose of this table is 100% for flavor. We didn’t want people to think we were making Tony Hawk Pro Skater the TTRPG. We also didn’t want folks who aren’t familiar with skate terms to think the game wasn’t for them. So, we created this table to help people understand the vibe and to help them get into it. You are under no obligation to use the table. If you do use the table you can use “Barky Monger” or “Barky Monger Chunt” or a full “Barky Monger Chunt with a Lazy Mast” … you get the picture. We’ve modified the instructions slightly to help clarify some of this. They now read as follows.

“A Skate Wizard's tricks are magical and different from any you may be familiar with. Feel free to make up your own trick names or roll 1D20 on each column from left to right to name your signature moves. This table is like a good bottle of hot sauce. Reach for it when you want more flavor in your game.”

Also, you should check out this cool cool trick name generator that Skate Wizard D. Hamberlin made https://dhamberlin.github.io/skate-wizards/ It includes all the terms from the original table plus a whole bunch of new terms.

Character Sheet
Finally, the character sheet has been updated with a new front image that takes better advantage of the space.

What's your attack bonus at lv1?

There is none. It is an option at Level 3. We're clarifying this in an upcoming update. However, a GM can always change this at their table with a house rule or homebrewed item.

Your game looks so cool, but when I try to pay for it, Paypal forces me to create account:

1) I clicked Pay with Paypal
2) Then Pay with Credit or Debit (not Login to Paypal)
3) At the bottom of the page the only button to proceed after putting in my payment info is "Create Account & Pay Now"

Is there any other site you have it on or anywhere I can buy it from?  I deleted my PayPal account and don't want to recreate it again :(

Thanks in advance!

In case anybody wants to be super lazy I made a random char generator https://skatewiz.bitvoid.dev/

I really dig this setting, love the art and theme! I would totally be down for more! I do have a couple questions...

In Step 2 it says DN increases with level, but I don't see that anywhere. Should it be a choice on the level features table somewhere?

There are slots for multiple bootleg spells, can you know more than one?

I'm currently playing a solo scenario I created. Please consider something like that in the future.

Thanks!

Hi Syd,

Sorry for the late response. Gonna consult Levi too and we'll have an answer back to you.

Thanks for the response! I liked this game so much that I also got Maze Rats to understand it more deeply. It seems increasing DN with level would not make sense. I've been playing that you can get additional Bootleg spells but the tapes are rare and hard to find. Thanks again, love the game!

Hey there, great username. We're getting ready to do another print run of the original and I'm going through the comments. I see that the instructions for Step 2 are confusing so I'm changing them to "some stats can increase as you level up."

Oh, yeah. Just one Bootleg Spell per day. We're looking at making changes to the character sheet but I think initially we though folks would cross the old one out and just write a new one.

Absolutely obsessed with this game. The art, the rules, the soundtrack, just an absolute incredible package.

THANKS so much!! We're working on Skate Wizards TWOOOO

WHAT?! Oh hell yes. Cant wait!

I was big into skateboarding in the late 80's so when I saw this I had to have it. I received it in the mail on Monday and already read through it. It's such a fun game concept.  Now I just need to find some people to play with. ha!  I laughed when I saw the Gleam the Cube spell. Great job on this Michael!

Thanks so much!!! Appreciate the compliments and hope you find some folks soon.

Hi, I ran Skate Wizards for my friends recently and loved it! I made some random tables for locations/monster/traps/treasure and I was wondering if it would be cool to put it up on itch.io for free or pay what you want. I can send it to you first to look at, credit however you'd like, just let me know!

hi! i’m new to dming. What range should the attacks have? i know melee should be adjacent but the rest? thanks! awesome game!!!

Hey Martin, sorry for the late reply. Sorry there's no hard and fast rule. Like a lot of things in rules-light games. Go with what feels best. If you want to establish a table rule then go for it!

This is a clever game. The really stand-out stand-alone piece is the 'Rando Spells' table. I wonder if this is an original idea with the author/team or an adaptation of some earlier incarnation. Either way, it's a great idea.

I'll have to ask Levi, but we definitely took inspiration from Ben Milton's Maze Rats!

Thanks!

Yeah, Ben Milton's Maze Rats has a similar method where you add up words and then interpret the result. Obviously the words in this game are Skate Wizard-ish. I'm not sure if others have done it before Maze Rats but that's where I saw it. Ben rules!

Can't wait to check it out and listen to the soundtrack.  Bob the worldbuilder turned me onto this game.

Yea Levi and I hope you enjoy it. Bob’s the best!!

Just throwing this Resource out there for you: https://playrole.notion.site/Creators-Program-f7ce12ca90ca47f881e13f70f7857973 Additionally, I created a Character sheet template there.  Pretty excited to run this TBH.

Nice! Thanks for that resource. Levi and I will check it out.

Michael, May I use the artwork from the book for my StartPlaying thumbnail? no worries if it's a no.

Also, Bob World Builder sent me.

Awesome! Welcome to the Order of Skate Wizards

Sure as longs you credit it. Thanks!

Same as many others, Bob the World Builder brought this to my attention- instantly had to mosey on over. I didn't get the bundle thing, but I needed to support something like this.

Out of a personal interest, I like to tweak things here and there- and this ruleset provides a really solid framework. Would you be alright if, in the future, I maybe made a modified version of this? I'd never put it up for sale or anything. Just for some fun between me and friends.

Yea I don't think that'll be a problem if you're using it between you and your friends.

Is there a license that I can or can not put a translation into german under?

(+1)

No license but if you translate one to German, let me know and I can make it available on here as well. Thanks!

https://genius-g.itch.io/skate-wizards-german I have it ready, I want to play it at my bithday party.
The page is restricted and the password is S.K.A.T.E.

Okay cool. I'll add it and make it free for folks to download.

I got my bundle in the mail today!  Really happy with it and can't wait to play it!

awesome !

Learned about this rad TTRPG from Bob World Builder, I cant wait to run this! Just finished reading the PDF and absolutely love this system and theme!

(+1)

Thanks so much! Levi and I are stoked to hear that. Thanks for picking one up. And thank you Bob The Worldbuilder !!!

(+1)

Bob World Builder brought me here too.  Read the PDF and liked it a lot.  Well done!

I'm going to give my PCs a "Free Burrito" coupon at the start of the session; they can give to their fellow PCs to acknowledge an awesome move or an epic fail.

Thanks so much! haha LOVE THAT

Thanks to Bob World Builder for the referral!

Thank you as well!

Are there player maps separate from the ones with all the text on them?

(+1)

Well, all the maps are GM facing  at the moment . . we don't have any player maps at the moment w/o text, but might be something we can do in the future.

Freaking awesome! Off to grab the soundtrack now.

(+1)

Awesome, my dudes. Will the character sheet be available here soon?

(and thanks Bob!)

Hi there! Yup they’re already on the page free to download - thanks again.

(+1)

No brain bucket required. Excellent game for a beer n smoke night!

(+1)

YUP!

Are the character sheets in the PDF?

At the moment, they’re just print ready ones like the sheets that come in the Zine packets, but we’re gonna work on a PDF fillable version!

They are PDF as well just not fillable PDFs I believe.

ah ok! I had someone on the video ask and then I realized I couldn't find them. Thought I'd check :D

Awesome idea, art and music.

Approved by the congregation of southerner ayahuasca skate wizards

I'm so glad I found out you guys had the PDF for sale here!
